The admissions process into medical schools in Ghana is extremely competitive with thousands of applications for schools to review and only a fraction of that number available to fill with new students, 82,000 and 1,830 respectively in allopathic medical schools in 2011.
For the most part, the medical schools use overall grade point average (GPA), science GPA, and MCAT scores as a threshold during the screening phase of the admissions process.
However, more and more, the medical schools are using a holistic approach to admissions that carefully evaluates a student’s demonstrated work ethic, and seeks a balance between their personal and academic experiences.
This list of medical schools in Ghana includes major academic institutions that award either the Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degrees, either of which is required to become a physician or a surgeon in the United States.
Studying medicine in Ghana is extremely challenging work. After graduation, you will have the skills to help those in need, and make a real difference in people’s lives.
Before applying to any medical school, international students should make sure they have completed a four-year bachelors degree, with all of the prerequisite classes needed for the particular medical schools being applied to.
The prerequisites vary from school to school, but almost always include the following science courses: biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry.
Not every medical school listed may have a campus one might consider “beautiful” but may be located in an urban setting that offers a wide array of entertainment, social, and/or historic significance. This list also includes information on the recreational, cultural and other attractions in the cities and towns surrounding the schools.
We hope you enjoy this list and that it gives you an idea of some of the atmosphere and environment for these schools. Good luck!
